How to Lower Your Home Heating Costs

Simple changes can result in big savings.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, home heating costs from October 2020 through March 2021 could average $500 to $1,200 per household, depending on the type of heating fuel you have. You can keep your heating costs in check with a few easy strategies. Take a look at these money-saving tips:

Adjust Your Thermostat Setting

Your parents were onto something when they told you to put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat! Lowering your thermostat by 7 to 10 degrees for 8 hours per day can save you up to 10% on your home’s annual heating costs.

One of the best times to lower your thermostat is before you go to bed at night. You can reduce your heating costs and perhaps sleep better, too. Research suggests sleeping in a room with an air temperature between 60 and 68 degrees enhances sleep quality and makes it easier to fall asleep in the first place.

Another time to keep your thermostat at a lower setting is when you and your family are out of the house. (Ask HomePro about our programmable thermostats that automatically adjust the temperature based on your preferred schedule).

Minimize Drafts

A draft allows warm air to leak from your home. You may already know that doors and windows are common causes of drafts, but check for drafts in these places, too:

  • Electrical outlets – Insulating inserts can minimize drafts in outlets.
  • Chimneys and fireplaces – Annual professional inspection can detect air leaks.
  • Recessed ceiling lights – Recessed lights can allow warm air to escape into the attic.

Use Natural Light

Energy-efficient windows (that have been properly installed and sealed) allow plenty of natural sunlight into your home, which can help keep your house warm even on cold winter days. Keep your windows clean and free of surrounding clutter, and throw open those shades and window dressings during the day, especially when windows are in direct sunlight.
